Parent Frequently Asked Questions

Flag Football

Q: Can my son or daughter be moved up to a different grade level based on skill or size?
A: Participants are only allowed to play with their current grade level. We do this to keep things fun in a low-competition environment and to develop a love of the game while building friendships within their grade.

Q: Why don't we have refs?
A: The purpose of our flag football league is to introduce the basic concepts of football and further develop a love of the game for the kids. It is meant to be fun and refs would take away from that. Penalties should be used as coaching opportunities. Additionally, not having refs helps keep our registration costs down. For more information about our philosophy, please check out the "Flag" page.

Q: Why are all of the games in Westphalia?
A: At this time, we have decided to keep all of the games in Westphalia because it makes it easier for parents. There is not much time in between the finish of the 2nd/3rd grade league and the start of the 4th/5th grade league, so having all of the games close makes it easier for parents that need to attend both.

Q: What equipment do I need to buy for flag football?
A: None. We provide the mouth guards, flags and footballs. Your child's shirt is covered by the registration fee and our sponsors. We recommend cleats, but they are not required.

Q: I've registered for flag football, how do I know what team my child is on?
A: The coach of your child's team will reach out to all of the parents on their team. This usually takes place sometime mid-August.

Q: Does my son or daughter need a sports physical to play flag football?
A: No. We do not require a sports physical to play flag football

Q: How are teams made? Can I request my son or daughter to be paired up with their friends or classmates?
A: Teams are created as fairly as possible to ensure a level playing field of competition while also making sure there is a good mix of kids from each school. At this time, we only ensure siblings are placed on the same team.

Tackle Football

Q: When does practice start?
A: 6th grade practice starts in early August, usually the same time the MHSAA allows the HS to start practicing. 7th and 8th grade starts a few weeks after due to league rules. The coaches of your teams will reach out to you as soon as they have practice information.

Q: What equipment do I need to buy for tackle football?
A: At this time, the only equipment not covered by PW Junior Football are cleats. Mouth guards, helmets, pads and jerseys are all supplied. Some participants prefer to buy their own mouth guard and chin straps, which we do allow, but it is not required.

Q: When are tackle football games held?
A: 6th graders play in the Mid Michigan Pony Football League (MMPFL) and play games on Saturdays with varying start times. 7th and 8th graders play in the Mid Michigan Middle School League (MMMSL) on Wednesday evenings with the 7th grade preceding the 8th grade game. The coaches of your team(s) will send out schedule information as soon as it is available.

Q: Where are games held?
A: The list of field locations for 6th grade football is listed on our website on the "Locations" page. All 6th, 7th and 8th grade tackle home games are played on the PWHS field. Refer to your schedules for game locations for 7th and 8th grade as we do not have a location list at this time.
